Is your “Alexandria” address in the city or in Fairfax County?
It could be either, and Ultimate Powerwash serves both. The City of Alexandria is an independent city that isn’t part of any county, but many homes and businesses with an Alexandria mailing address sit in unincorporated Fairfax County, including much of the Route 1 corridor, Hybla Valley and the Mount Vernon area.
In Virginia, cities are independent of the surrounding counties. The City of Alexandria covers Old Town, Del Ray, Rosemont, Parker-Gray, Potomac Yard, Carlyle, Seminary Hill and the West End. Beyond the city limits, the Postal Service uses “Alexandria” for large parts of eastern Fairfax County, including Huntington, Belle Haven, Hybla Valley, Groveton, the Mount Vernon and Fort Hunt areas, Kingstowne and Lincolnia.
For cleaning, the difference shows up in housing type. The city leans toward historic rowhouses, older detached homes and newer townhome development, while the Fairfax County side along Route 1 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway has more mid-century single-family homes and townhome communities, where our professional house washing is the usual starting point. If you live near Kingstowne or Franconia, our page on pressure washing in Springfield may also be useful.
How do you clean historic brick in Old Town Alexandria?
Gently. Old Town has many 18th- and 19th-century brick rowhouses, and older brick and mortar are generally softer than modern masonry, so Ultimate Powerwash uses low pressure and a mild, rinse-based approach rather than a hard spray that could erode the surface or the joints.
Historic brick was typically fired differently from modern brick, and older walls are often laid in softer, lime-based mortar. Both can be worn away by high pressure. The goal on an old wall is to remove dirt, organic staining and loose grime, not to strip the surface back to new.
- We look at the brick and mortar before choosing a method, and we start with the gentlest approach that will work.
- We don’t aim concentrated pressure at mortar joints or at soft, weathered brick faces.
- If we see crumbling mortar or spalling brick, we point it out rather than clean over it; repair is a job for a masonry specialist.
Brick sidewalks, front steps and small rear patios in Old Town can be cleaned the same careful way. Our concrete and brick cleaning service covers the method in more detail.
Can painted brick, wood siding and trim be washed safely?
Yes, at low pressure. Many Alexandria homes have painted brick, painted wood siding, shutters and trim, and Ultimate Powerwash cleans them with a soft wash so the paint is cleaned rather than blasted.
Paint in good condition washes up well. Paint that’s already blistered, cracked or peeling can lift under any washing, even a gentle one, so we point out those spots before we start. Our soft washing service explains why low pressure is the default for painted and delicate surfaces, and our article on soft washing versus pressure washing compares the two methods.
Why do Alexandria homes near the Potomac grow algae and mildew so quickly?
Humidity, shade and close quarters. Homes near the Potomac riverfront deal with humid air on top of Virginia’s hot, humid summers, and narrow streets, rowhouse walls and small shaded rear yards keep many surfaces from drying out.
In Old Town, buildings stand shoulder to shoulder. Rear walls, side passages and walled gardens get little direct sun, so brick patios, steps and lower walls often carry green algae, gray mildew spotting or moss, and damp patios get slippery.
Cleaning these tight spaces takes more care than pressure. We plan around neighbors’ walls, plantings and limited access, and we use our patio cleaning service for the brick and concrete courtyards common behind rowhouses.
Do you wash townhome and condo communities in Alexandria?
Yes. Ultimate Powerwash works with individual owners and with community associations and property managers across Alexandria’s townhome and condo communities, cleaning siding, brick, sidewalks, entries and shared amenity areas.
Alexandria has a large share of attached housing, from older rowhouses to newer townhome communities in areas like Potomac Yard, Carlyle and Kingstowne. On attached homes, the building is shared, so one owner’s wash affects the look of the whole row. Associations often prefer to clean a row or building at once for a consistent result.
For shared sidewalks, parking areas, dumpster enclosures and building exteriors, see our commercial pressure washing page. We also serve storefronts, restaurants and offices across the city and along Route 1.
