Is Falmouth part of Stafford County or Fredericksburg?
Falmouth is in Stafford County, not the City of Fredericksburg, even though it faces downtown Fredericksburg across the Rappahannock and many addresses use a Fredericksburg mailing city. Ultimate Powerwash is based in Stafford County, so Falmouth is close-to-home work for us.
Falmouth grew up on the north bank of the Rappahannock at the falls, where US-1 and US-17 now meet. US-1 crosses the river into Fredericksburg, and US-17 heads west toward Hartwood. Because Falmouth sits between the two markets, it overlaps with both our Stafford County service area and our pressure washing in Fredericksburg page.
How should Falmouth’s historic homes be washed?
Gently, and only after a close look at the material. Older brick, soft mortar and painted wood on Falmouth’s historic homes can be damaged by high pressure, so Ultimate Powerwash uses low pressure or soft washing and treats washing as cleaning, not paint or mortar removal.
Falmouth dates to the early 1700s, when it was laid out as a port town on the Rappahannock, and the old village holds some of Stafford County’s oldest homes. Part of it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Falmouth Historic District. Belmont, the Gari Melchers Home and Studio, stands on the hill above the village, and Chatham Manor overlooks the river a short way downstream on the Stafford side.
- Older brick
- Often softer than modern brick. High pressure can pit the face or strip away its fired surface.
- Soft mortar
- Older lime-based mortar is softer than modern mortar by design and can wash out of joints under force.
- Painted clapboard and trim
- Washing cleans sound paint. Loose paint may come away, so we point out flaking areas before we start.
- Stone foundations and steps
- Moss and lichen settle into the texture. Gentle cleaning lifts loose growth without scouring the stone.
Brick and stone cleaning falls under our concrete and masonry cleaning service, and our article is soft washing safe for siding explains why low pressure suits older painted wood.
Why do Falmouth homes near the river stay damp and green?
The Rappahannock keeps the air along Falmouth’s low-lying streets humid, and mature trees slow drying after rain and dew. Walls that stay damp grow algae, mildew, moss and lichen faster, especially brick and stone that hold moisture.
The village sits on the riverbank and the slopes rising from it. Homes closest to the water, and walls shaded by old trees or by the hillside, dry slowly through Virginia’s hot, humid summers. Porches and steps facing the river can turn slick with growth even in summer.
- Green algae on north-facing and shaded walls
- Gray or black mildew spotting under porch roofs and eaves
- Moss in the joints of brick walks and stone steps
- Lichen on old masonry, which clings tightly and may leave faint marks after cleaning
House washing for Falmouth’s newer neighborhoods
Beyond the old village, much of Falmouth is suburban housing with vinyl siding, concrete driveways and wood or composite decks. Ultimate Powerwash soft washes the siding and pressure washes the concrete on these homes, often in the same visit.
Subdivisions spread north and west of the village along US-1 and US-17, many on sloped or wooded lots. Our page on house washing in Stafford describes a typical visit. Shaded backyard decks gray and mildew, and deck cleaning around Fredericksburg covers the low-pressure approach we use on wood. Once a deck is clean and dry, deck and fence staining and sealing helps protect it, with 150+ stain colors available.
Commercial pressure washing in Falmouth
Ultimate Powerwash cleans shops, restaurants, offices and older commercial buildings around the US-1 and US-17 junction in Falmouth, adjusting pressure for older masonry.
Businesses near the junction serve commuters heading to and from Fredericksburg, and their entries, sidewalks and parking areas show it. Older buildings in the village need the same care as the historic homes around them. See commercial pressure washing in Fredericksburg for the kind of work we do on both sides of the river.
